SPACE ATLAS – 1971 ACE SPACE COMPANY

Space Atlas was published in 1971 by Dana Atchley and the Ace Space Company. The project leveraged the international postal system to connect with far-flung friends from around the world while living on remote Vancouver Island.

Space Atlas was the second of two similar publications–the first was Notebook One in 1970. At the time of conception Xerography and instant printing were just becoming available at reasonable prices, and the ability to create multiple copies was a new-found opportunity for artists and writers.

Ace Space Company purchased 250 empty three-ring notebook binders and asked friends to contribute pages to the project.

The rules were simple:

Each contributor had to reproduce
250 copies of each page
up to a maximum of ten.

Nothing was rejected.

No rights were reserved.

No copies were for sale.

120 contributors from seven countries contributed pages and each person received two copies of the final compilation. The project launched Ace Space Company on the road for nearly twenty years. A goal of this online project is to reconnect with the contributors. If you are one please email Dana Atchley.
