Workshop Overview Day Four

Course Objectives:
The objective of the workshop is for each participant to create a finished digital story. A digital story combines various media elements including video, narration, photographs, illustrations and music. Story length should not exceed four minutes. In the case of stories intended for the web, length should not exceed ninety seconds. Finished stories will be output to tape and may be archived to other digital media. Final stories will be technically suitable for broadcast, and may be scaled to accommodate other platforms including playback from CD-ROM and the Internet.

Expectations:
The workshop is intended to introduce the concepts and techniques of digital storytelling by creating a finished story. It is designed to share knowledge and inspiration so participants will be able to use the techniques in their business and personal life. It is not intended to be a "tools" course. The focus will be on simple, rather then technically complex stories. The faculty will be available not only to assist with your projects but also to create value-added elements as necessary.

Tools:
Adobe Premiere will be the primary tool to capture, output and create each story. We will use several other tools including Apple's iMovie, Adobe Photoshop and QuickTime to polish and add visual value stories. Each storyteller will have an Apple G3 Laptop or an iMac digital video workstation. We will also have a separate station setup for scanning and recording audio.

Preparation:
It is essential that participants have some kind of story outline created prior to the workshop accompanied by related media assets. We can accept the following videotape formats: VHS, Hi8, 3/4", Betacam and DV-CAM. We can accept pre-digitized media on Zip drives or CDs for both Mac and PC. We can record sound and scan flat art, slides and photos as well as shoot video on DV-CAM.

Workshop Overview
Day One

Introductions:
Each participant and faculty member to make a brief introduction.

Digital Story Examples:
We will show a number of digital stories that showcase both technical as well as narrative possibilities. We will explore elements of narrative structure such as point of view, the dramatic question, pacing and the idea of desire, action and realization.

Roundtable Discussion:
We will hold a group roundtable to discuss each participant's expectations and intended story. This session is to focus expectations and to provide feedback so that the digital stories can be reasonably completed during the workshop. We will review scripts and discuss available media assets and discuss the concepts of creating stories for the web vs. stories intended for live or broadcast environments
.

Adobe Photoshop Demonstration:
In order for a story to be "digital" all media assets must be digitized and Photoshop will be our primary tool. We will introduce several basic concepts including scanning, cropping, image selection and manipulation and layers. All images will be scanned at a fairly high resolution and cropped to size before they can be imported into the project.

Digitizing & Scripting:
The remainder of the afternoon will be devoted to digitizing images and video and script work. We strongly suggest that storytellers limit the number of images they bring to twenty or less and that video be less than five minutes. If you have longer amounts of video please make sure to log the takes that you intend to use.

Workshop Overview
Day Two

Goals:
Introduction to Adobe Premiere. Finish digitizing and scripts. Begin editing in Premiere. Rough edits by end of day if possible.

Adobe Premiere Demonstration:
Premiere is a powerful editing tool that allows many special effects to be created. Effects such as image pans (think Ken Burns's documentary style) and compositing with motion can be easily achieved.

Digitize Tape:
Videotape sources will be digitized from tape by firewire.

Edit:
Begin editing projects.

Break for Lunch

Editing: All storytellers continue with editing.

Record Voiceovers:
A separate workstation will be available to record for your project. This will allow you to time visuals or to tailor scripts to match existing visuals.

Workshop Overview
Day Three

Goals:
All stories should be completed in rough edit form by noon. Begin special effects editing.

Edit:
Storytellers will continue with editing and complete rough edits by lunch

Special Effects Editing:
Scenes needing special effects will be created and integrated into the project.

Break for Lunch

Audio and Music:
Music tracks to be added. Complicated tracks may mixed in SoundEdit Pro and Deck.

Continue Editing:
Editing will continue until 5pm. The studio will remain open and available for those who wish to work late.

Workshop Overview
Day Four

Goals:
All stories should be completed by noon. Group showing of stories.

Break for Lunch

Output:
Stories will be output to videotape.

Group Discussion:
Discussion about what lessons have been learned as well as ways to integrate digital storytelling into client objectives. Discussion of how to create ongoing digital storytelling initiatives.
