CHARON'S QUINCE - THE STYGIAN PRESS, 1963

In the fall of 1962
I began a European adventure as part of Dartmouth's Senior Fellow Program. The primary focus of the trip was to visit the libraries and designers that I had been studying and to gather my observations into a book. My adventures exceeded the bounds of the initial mission and included playing music at English Folk Clubs and a long distance romance.

I documented the three month journey in a series of small marbled notebooks filled with ramdom thoughts, detailed observations on printing and the graphic arts, drawings and ephemera. I titled the book Charon's Quince – a

reference to Charon, the ferryman who carried the souls of the dead across the river Styx. In those days people who set type were often called "Printer's Devils".

I printed forty copies of Charon's Quince at the Stinehour Press on their Vandercook Proof press on Arches paper using Monotype set Bembo.

I have recreated the book in PDF form with a few updates which include watercolors and photographs.
