US STAMPMUTATIONS
Famous Amercian Compsers–Stephen Foster

In 1940 the U.S. Government issued a series of stamps entilted "Famous American Artists".

These included categories for composers and painters and writers in various denominations.

The lowest denomination–one cent–in the composer series was Stephen Collins Foster who wrote and perfomed in black face makeup the poplular song "Old Folks at Home". Most will remember its famous first line:"Way down upon the Swanee River, far, far away"
